Five Million Foreign Tourists Visited India Last Year

Union Tourism and Culture Minister ndash; Ambika Soni said that India welcomes more tourists from the foreign countries as compared to the previous year. India’s historic treasure and natural beauty has earned the country the fastest growth in the tourism industry. According to the estimate around five million tourists visited the country in 2007 competing the ratio of 2006 which was 3.92 million.

The tourism authority has set the target to increase the number of more foreign tourists in the country by focusing on the development of major cities. Not only the foreign tourists but the percentage of domestic tourists has also increased considerably. Around 400 million domestic tourists traveled across different parts of the country in the year 2007. India has the long tradition of hospitality and offers various attractions as the multifaceted tourists destination.

She said in the time being India has emerged the major economic activity providing income and employment opportunities and acting as a catalyst for socio economic transformation also earns precious foreign exchange for the country and promotes international goodwill and support. She talked about the new project ‘Zest Big Beach ndash; Puducherry’ of the Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India Limited MHRIL at Manapet coastal village. The tourism industry has released the sum of Rs 35 crore for the same.

Puducherry will emerge as the major cruising center in the near future. She said We should work together to make Puducherry as a major destination as was done in respect of Sikkim and Goa and other destinations;. Efforts are being made to popularize the project in collaboration with the Union Shipping Ministry.

There are plans to develop 74 heritage sites in Puducherry and promote them equally to attract more and more tourists. The Auroville International Project and Sri Aurobindo Ashram here were adding to richness the legacy and also fullfledged projection of Puducherry as a destination.

Soni punctuated that the we are already receiving inquiries about the Auroville from different parts of the world which is the good sign.
